The publication Twisted, Urban and visionary landscapes in contemporary painting coincides with the exhibition of the same name of the work of fifteen young, international painters. A defining characteristic of these artists is their figurative visual language. This is actually not so much a reference to a tangible reality, but rather to the reality manifest in video and computer games, television, film, advertising and other media expressions. It is a reality that is completely man-made, manipulated and synthetic, far removed from 'normal' reality. Thus many of the works included are characterized by artificial use of colour, sampling of disparate elements and patterns that are almost abstract. This creates a world that on the one hand tends to exalt its very impermanence; on the other hand, it has a disconcerting undertone.
An introductory text, extensive visual documentation, and a biography and bibliography serve to present each of the artists.
The artists are: Dexter Dalwood, Sharon Ellis, Chris Finley, John Currin, Michael Raedecker, David Thorpe, Takashi Murakami, Sarah Morris, Nancy Hobermann, L.C. Armstrong, Hans Broek, Lisa Yuskavage, Damian Loeb, Jack Hallberg, Fred Tomaselli and Paul Morrison.
