A companion to the volume on Peter Märkli, this publication focuses on the work of the young Swiss engineer Jürg Conzett, who has done more than most in redefining the role of structural engineering and its relation to architecture.
Since setting up his own practice, Conzett has worked with many of Switzerland's leading architects, including Peter Zumthor. Conzett's engineering innovations are often based on the reconsideration, with a completely fresh eye, of precedents. His range of references extends from the Baroque churches of Grubenmann to the thin-shell designs of Isler, via the bridges of Brunel or the timber formworks of the carpenter/engineer Coray. The rigour of his approach produces structures that, like those of an earlier era, make us truly wonder.
Because of the hybrid nature of the work, this book will appeal not only to architects and engineers but also to a growing audience interested in the impact of engineering infrastructures on our natural environment
