This exhibition is being held after the extensive restoration of the important architectural complex of Santa Maria Annunziata in Abbiategrasso. The catalogue, published for this suggestive exhibition, shows artworks, for the most part from the Renaissance, and is an important tribute to the history and culture of Lombardy.
The restoration interventions undertaken were aimed at recovering the architecture and art of the church and its cloisters, thus returning one of the most interesting and fascinating chapters of local history to the community. This is a truly "rediscovered" Renaissance, thanks to the joint efforts of the institutions involved in the project and in particular the Assessorato alle Culture, Identità e Autonomie of the Lombardy Region.
As this building was a reference point in Lombardy under the Sforza family now, in the twenty-first century, this role has been rediscovered as a significant and many-sided reference point for high profile cultural events.
The architectural restoration of the church and the interiors of the complex and especially the sublime discovery of the cycle of frescos by Nicola Mangone, better known as il Moietta, dated 1519, tell the tale of an age of splendour, the cultural intensity of Renaissance Abbiategrasso. Careful examination of the paintings has revealed that Il Moietta belonged to a generation of painters from the beginning of the sixteenth century who benefited form the influence of the great Renaissance masters, particularly those working in Milan.
From this point of view this exhibition, set in the late gothic architecture of the Church of the Annunziata, takes on a role of paramount importance.
The discovery of these frescos opens up new and unexpected prospects in the study of the Renaissance in Lombardy.
