The Encyclopedia of the World Press will be the first comprehensive reference work to embrace more than six centuries of change in the world of newspapers. Compiled with the assistance of leading press authorities, plus archivists, academics and others, it will provide an invaluable instant alphabetical guide for journalists, historians, media students and everyone interested in newspapers. More than 8,000 entries will cover 180 countries, with articles on subjects such as associations, newspaper groups/chains, newspapers, editors, journalists, managers, proprietors and printers from 1400 (the birth of Gutenberg) to the year 2000. Long essays by distinguished historians will trace the world-wide growth of the press, and there will be more than 200 articles by today's newspaper leaders on diverse topics, such as press censorship, sports writing, cartooning, and advertising. The Encyclopedia will also contain a detailed chronology, thematic bibliography, index, plus some 200 illustrations depicting the history of the newspaper press.
