The Falcon Complex and Catacomb of the Sacred Animal Necropolis at North Saqqara were discovered in 1969 and excavated by the Egypt Exploration Society expedition directed by W B Emery until his death in Cairo in March 1971. Fieldwork continued under the directorship of H S Smith (Field Director) and G T Martin (Site Director) and was completed by 1976. Though not the first volume to arise from the Sacred Animal Necropolis excavations, this volume is the first product of a collaboration between H S Smith and Sue Davies to publish, as fully as possible, the EES work of the 1970s. Two further volumes by Sue Davies and H S Smith will be published in 2006. The volume includes full architectural and archaeological descriptions of the Falcon Complex and Catacomb, an illustrated catalogue of the objects which were discovered during the excavation and a discussion (section 5) of the nature of the Falcon cult at North Saqqara, as revealed in the inscriptional material from the site.
