This is the first time that a work has concentrated solely on state beds and throne canopies in England, with information not only on their historical and stylistic development and the role that they played in the theatre of courtly ritual, but, importantly, on the surviving objects themselves and how they are cared for.
State Beds and Throne Canopies: Care and Conservation provides guidelines for conservation approaches and planning. The methods whereby these objects are stabilised and cared for are outlined with short case histories following each chapter to illustrate pertinent points. The information accrued and the strategies which have evolved to cope with the particular demands of these rare objects will be of value to a wide audience of owners, curators and collection managers, who may not have access to specialist advice inhouse, and to all those with an interest in our national heritage and in preserving it for future generations to enjoy.
