Nearly 60 European paintings and sculptures, from the late 18th through the early 20th century, are on view at The Phillips Collection, February 16 through May 12, 2002. Including major French Impressionist and early modernist works, Corot to Picasso: European Masterworks from the Smith College Museum of Art features such artists as Ingres, Cézanne, Courbet, Degas, Gauguin, Monet, Seurat, Kirchner, and Kandinsky. This exhibition is touring in the United States while the Smith College Museum of Art undergoes renovation and expansion.
The outstanding masterworks in Corot to Picasso range from large history paintings to intimate genre scenes and include portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. Among the highlights are a study for A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Seurat, Kirchner's Dodo and Her Brother, and an early landscape by Kandinsky. Also included are portraits by Degas, Manet and Renoir, a rare Paris landscape by Gauguin, three paintings by Monet, and a major group composition by Courbet.
