This publication is the result of a conference held at the Freer Gallery of Art on September 27-29, 2007.
Ceramics formed an increasingly important part of Charles Lang Freer's collecting from 1906, when he made his initial gift to the nation, until his death in 1919. By the time the Freer Gallery of Art opened in 1923, the collection included superb examples of ceramics made in China, Japan, and Korea as well as the Islamic Near East. That collection has been continuously expanded to this day, while the collections of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery have been bolstered by major gifts of Southeast Asian ceramics, and ancient Iranian ceramics in particular.
The Fourth Forbes Symposium on Scientific Studies in the Field of Asian Art provided an opportunity to bring together scientists, archaeologists, and historians engaged in ceramic research, and to highlight the role that science can play in elucidating questions as wide ranging as dating, provenance, and methods of manufacture.
