Fondation créée il y a un siècle et toujours active, la Sauvegarde de l'art français est la plus ancienne structure oeuvrant pour la défense du patrimoine. Méconnue, elle préfigure l'actuelle sensibilisation à ces sujets, autour de la Fondation du patrimoine, ou de la Mission Bern... La Sauvegarde de l'art français est une fondation reconnue d'utilité publique créée en 1921 par le duc de Trévise, avec le concours de sa cousine Aliette de Rohan Chabot, marquise de Maillé, et le soutien de personnalités du monde artistique, littéraire et politique de l'époque.
Grand orateur, connaisseur de l'art et de l'architecture, le duc engagea La Sauvegarde dans une mission primordiale de défense du patrimoine, levant des fonds, menant des actions locales et internationales, donnant l'impulsion à de grandes actions de sauvetage de monuments en péril et d'oeuvres d'art menacées. La marquise de Maillé continua, pendant la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, une action toujours nécessaire, faisant face à de nouvelles questions et assurant, à sa disparition, les conditions financières de la survie de l'association.
Le legs Maillé permet aujourd'hui de financer chaque année la restauration de centaines d'églises rurales. Devenue fondation en 2017, la SAF poursuit le combat patrimonial et diversifie ses interventions par de nouveaux programmes de financement et de soutien à la recherche, tout en abritant d'autres associations vouées à la protection et à la connaissance du patrimoine. Un siècle après sa création, peu de temps après le centenaire de la loi de 1913 sur les monuments historiques, le moment est venu de replacer l'oeuvre de la Sauvegarde de l'art français au centre des préoccupations publiques, et de mettre en lumière son histoire, ses actions actuelles et son ambition pour le futur.
L'ouvrage est agrémenté de nombreux documents d'archives et photographies anciennes tirées des archives de la fondation, désormais accessibles aux chercheurs. Les prises de vue contemporaines ancrent cette histoire dans la réalité patrimoniale et territoriale, de même que les contributions d'éminents spécialistes qui dynamisent le récit tout en l'agrémentant de témoignages actuels.
