The book Metals and Museums in the Mediterranean was published in 2008 as outcome of the EU funded FP6 INCO programme PROMET. The 40-months project was dealing with the protection and conservation of archaeological and historic metal collections in the Mediterranean Region. For this purpose 21 partner institutes from Mediterranean countries in Europe, Arabia and North Africa collaborated on the investigation of various issues, such as diagnostic methods for damage assessment, environmental monitoring, sustainable conservation treatments and the development of new coating and corrosion inhibitors. The book gives an introduction about the particular requirements of protecting metal collections in the Mediterranen Region, common conservation practices and the policies followed. Furthermore, an overview is given about the research results achieved by the PROMET consortium. The activities of PROMET are presented with case studies of specific metal collections, such as for example the silver collection of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo or the archaeological metals in the National Museum of Damascus. The book is illustrated with a large number of colour figures and a CD is included with additional information and an example database.
