Mantles of Merit - Chin Textiles from Myanmar, India and Bangladesh is the product of four years of research into the history, culture and textiles of the Chin people, a diversified group, and, until now, inadequately studied. Their rich textile culture emphasizes grand blankets and intricate tunics, made of homespun cotton, flax, hemp and silk, dyed with indigo and woven on a loom. In considering Chin textiles as art and cultural objects, the book describes both their beauty and technical mastery and their integral role in the Chin effort to achieve merit in this life and the next. A particular strength of the book is its emphasis on the Chin people and their neighbors.
Over 700 illustrations, with 600 in color, include meticulous drawings of textile structures, as well as photographs taken by early missionaries and scholars from Chin family albums and recent field photographs. Finally there are also detailed and studio photographs of the world's great collections of Chin textiles.
