Contemporary and vangard XXth century sculpture appears on the scene thanks the activity of a few great artists like Picasso, Gauguin and Matisse. In their works wood is chosen as a privileged medium, particularly ductile to satisfy the various expressive needs, often careful of the models inherited by tribal and archaic cultures. The potential of wood is enquired through the sculptures and the theoretical reflections of Gabriella Benedini, Giuliano Mauri and Salvatore Scarpitta, in an exhibition presenting three parallel stories that is to say three differents ways of approaching the use of wood in art.Torre Colombera became a Foundation in 1999 and it gave birth to the exhibitional project called Materiamadre, having as a main theme the materials of artworks, enquired through a cycle of nine exhibitions, three every year, focused on the activity of three scultpors for each show. Lignea offers the visitor the occasion to understand the various ways to exalt the identity of wood, through its physical and imaginative qualities, as an anthropological sign connected to the landscape and a privileged medium for expressing different artistical needs
