Resumen del libro

La exposición de un objeto arqueológico simboliza la conclusión de un trabajo pautado, desarrollado con rigor y metodológicamente concebido como es la práctica de la arqueología. Cargados de significado, estos objetos son la cara visible del conocimiento adquirido, mediante cuya exposición el museo los pone al alcance del visitante para su contemplación. El museo asume, sin embargo, una contradicción: piezas únicas envueltas de significación social, antropológica, histórica y artística conviven con muchas otras, de condiciones similares, en un espacio único, a la vista de todos, expuestas a muchos peligros. Pero forma parte del compromiso social del museo exponerlas, y debe asumir la responsabilidad de su conservación para que el legado sea eterno.

Este pequeño manual intenta contribuir a hacer posible este imposible. Procurar la conservación de los objetos de nuestros antepasados en condiciones desfavorables. Extraídos del medio que los ha conservado durante siglos, ahora, dentro de una vitrina o encima de una peana, el museo intenta crearles un entorno confortable y seguro al alcance de todos.

Encontrará aquí el lector algunas reflexiones sobre la arqueología y los materiales que constituyen los objetos arqueológicos; la necesidad de comprender el medio que los ha conservado y de deducir su entorno más adecuado en el momento de su exposición, con la esperanza de colaborar en la difícil y contradictoria tarea que supone conservar y exhibir en beneficio del cumplimiento de la también difícil misión de los museos de la enseñanza y transmisión del legado de nuestros antepasados.
