Kounellis and San Lupo is taking place at the height of the artist's creative and poetic career. He can work in places and areas which have profound personal meaning and, using his unique language, create "unique acts" with great impact and strength of communication which verge on dramatic art.
In Kounellis' work for San Lupo, we see the return of coats, vestiges of human presence. Scattered all over a floor under which they once buried the dead. A huge iron cross is poised inside the building, set at an angle that imitates and is reminiscent of depictions of Christ carrying the Cross.
As always happens with Kounellis' works, the artist has created a strong rapport with the setting. On the one hand, he has achieved this through the obvious scenic and theatrical power of San Lupo itself, on the other, through the character of a place once used for religious purposes and burial.
The essential nature of the combination of components used to construct this work blends perfectly with the spontaneity of the setting.
