The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam keeps a unique collection of almost 500
Japanese prints. The majority of these come from the collection of Vincent van Gogh and his brother Theo. The collection contains some important prints as well as entire series by major 19th-century Japanese masters such as Kunisada, Kuniyoshi and Hiroshige.
The collection reveals how deeply Van Gogh was influenced by Japanese art and culture. The landscape motifs, the striking colour contrasts and daring compositions of Japanese prints gave Van Gogh direction in his quest to make a personal contribution to the development of modern art.
Catalogue of the Japanese Prints - Van Gogh Museum's Collection is a revised edition of Catalogue of the Van Gogh Museum's Collection of Japanese Prints from 1991. Fifty illustrations have been added and the table of contents according to artist makes the book easier to reference. There is also an introduction by museum director Axel Rüger and information on the museum's recent print acquisition.
