Perhaps more than any other ancient people, the Phoenicians made the sea their own, in this case the Mediterranean Sea which they lined with ports and coastal cities. This study presents a systematic analysis of the archaeological and epigraphic evidence in order to reconstruct the itineraries of the Phoenicians between the 10th and 1st centuries BC. By focusing on each geographical location, island and city in turn, Lipinski demonstrates the extent to which the Phoenicians were masters of the sea and trade. Particular attention is paid to evidence from sites across Cyprus, Anatolia, Greece, the Middle East and the North African coast. The meticulous study is supported by photographs of artefacts and sites as well as maps.
