From the late ninteenth century, wood engraving became a medium for creative expression. One of the most prolific engravers was Gwen Raverat, who trained as a painter and developed an impressionistic approach to the craft. Her skill at conveying atmosphere and different qualities of light was unrivalled, and she also had a strong sense of character which came through in her numerous illustrations of children's books. This book is the first ever assessment of gwen Raverat as a wood engraver, exploring her technique and her experiments with colour prints. It includes a full catalogue of all her engravings and a descriptive bibliography of the books and ephemera which she illustrated. This book was first published in 1996 as a limited edition by Fleece Press, and here is made more accessible to a wider audience who can fully appreciate her work.
