Resumen del libro
Fra Angelico, uno de los grandes maestros del Renacimiento florentino, nació cuando estaba a punto de iniciarse el siglo XV. Hacia 1420, siendo ya un pintor formado, tomó los hábitos de la orden Dominica. Por esa condición suya de religioso los historiadores del arte le han tratado muchas veces como una figura al margen de sus contemporáneos. En este catálogo se sostiene en cambio que participó plenamente de los movimientos artísticos, políticos y sociales de su época, y que su obra se encuentra a la altura de las de Brunelleschi, Ghiberti, Donatello, Masaccio, Uccello y Filippo Lippi, artistas todos ellos que también están presentes en este volumen. Estos grandes maestros florentinos inventaron nuevas maneras de hacer arquitectura, de construir el espacio mediante la perspectiva y de representar la figura humana en la escultura y la pintura.
El autor de este libro generosamente ilustrado, que contiene dos ensayos sobre la Florencia de la época vista por Fra Angelico y sobre su obra vista desde España, es Carl Brandon Strehlke, al que se deben numerosos estudios sobre los maestros renacentistas del siglo XV. Ana González Mozo, experta en las técnicas pictóricas italianas, se ha centrado por su parte en los hallazgos que ha ofrecido el estudio técnico del retablo de la Anunciación del Museo del Prado, y en su importancia para conocer mejor el proceso creativo de una obra del Renacimiento.
