Feminine fashions have always been the product, not only of individual self-expression but also, and perhaps more importantly, of societal norms and role expectations which have always been co-determinants of both the intrinsic and extrinsic ideal of feminine beauty. An exemplary design selection of epoch-making developments, such as the chemise dress, the Biedermeier crinoline and the functional dress propagated by the reform movement is linked with its ideological and temporal context while individual freedoms of design are explored.
Apart from giving an historical overview, the present publication also focuses on the current fashion situation. The young fashion designer Eva Gronbach presents the work of such brilliant designers as Yamamoto, Miyake, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Lang et al as well as striking creations hot off the drawing-boards of the young generation of designers. At the interface of physical construct, dematerialisation and the transition to work of art, fashion has assumed a new dimension.
The catalogue accompanying an exhibition at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst [Museum for the Applied Arts] in Cologne, this book is sumptuously illustrated with epochal fashion designs accompanied by interdisciplinary essays contributed by eminent specialists in fashion. A sweeping panorama of over 200 years of fashion trends.
