Europan NL has reached its sixth round. In 2001 this two-yearly collaboration between a dozen European countries once again yielded a competition for young architects. This year's entrants were provided with a total of seventy sites across Europe on which to interpret the theme of 'In-between Cities'. (The Dutch version, attuned as it is to the Dutch situation, translates as 'Hybridization of the City'.) These sites are, effectively, interstitial areas, sandwiched between
town and periphery.
Over 250 projects were devised for the Dutch sites and submitted by young architects from in and out of the Netherlands. The jury, whose members included Wytze Patijn, Don Murphy, Paul Schnabel, Yorgos Simeoforidis and
Madeleine Maaskant, selected five first- and four
second-prize winners and one special mention.
Europan 6 - In-between Cities gives an overview of the prizewinners, exhaustively documenting their projects with model photographs, plans and conceptual sketches.Interviews with the designers shed further light on the
projects. The project section of the book also includes an essay on the main theme by Tjerk Ruimschotel, a description of the sites by Madeleine Maaskant, the jury report care of Wytze Patijn and Olof Koekebakker, and an analysis of the entries by Aaron Betsky. This year's book once again includes a CD-ROM which, along with the prizewinners, also features those who were eliminated in the final round. The winners were additionally given the opportunity to introduce themselves on the CD-ROM in a short video film.publiarq.com
