The work of the architect Eckhard Schulze-Fielitz, who was born in Stettin in 1929 is of the greatest importance for the discourse on contemporary architecture.
After his first work, which was influenced by Modernism, Schulze-Fielitz began to explore the possibilities of mass production, modular spatial systems, urban growth and its social effects. He joined the GEAM Group, which Yona Friedman belonged to, in 1961. His explorations led him to housing construction and the examination of ecological sustainability, global distribution processes and 'gentle' housing construction concepts for Africa and the Middle East. He published the results of this work in Stadtsysteme/Urban Systems, which appeared in 1971.
Later he developed his Metaeder theory (the connection of construction elements), which was an important contribution to architecture research.
His work provided a fertile basis for architectural discourse on contemporary urban planning and housing construction.
