The EPMOW Locations volumes contain entries on the principal traditions, genres and styles of popular music that have been or are being practiced in particular cities, districts/neighbourhoods, cross-border regions, nation states, and diasporic communities around the world.
Included are discussions on significant venues such as theatres, dance halls, clubs and bars. Also included are the roles of significant institutions - music publishers, recording companies, studios, radio and TV stations and government regulatory bodies - together with the notable musicians and other individuals such as producers, engineers or industry personnel associated with each location.
Written by leading popular music scholars and other music professionals, each entry first profiles a place in terms of its principal social, political, economic, cultural and linguistic characteristics before launching into a balanced account of the historical and recent activities in popular music of each location. All entries conclude with a bibliography, discographical reference section and discography, with additional information on sheet music and visual recordings.
Divided by continental region, the volumes contain maps and are individually indexed. To be available as a five volume set, they are organized as follows:
Volume 3 - Caribbean and Latin America;
Volume 4 - North America;
Volume 5 - Oceania and Asia;
Volume 6 - Africa and the Middle East;
Volume 7 - Europe.
