Il volume ritesse la trama delle vicende di Giulio Mazzoni (Piacenza 1518/1519-1590), pittore, stuccatore e scultore ricordato da Giorgio Vasari in un breve medaglione biografico che ne elogia la versatilità e le abilità nelle diverse arti. Mettendone in luce la poliedrica personalità rispetto a quella dei protagonisti della decorazione nell'età della Maniera con cui si trovò a contatto più o meno diretto - Giorgio Vasari, Perino del Vaga, Daniele da Volterra, Michelangelo - se ne ricostruisce il catalogo delle opere e si rende ragione della posizione di grande prestigio raggiunta a Roma e nel ducato farnesiano. L'analisi dei documenti, delle fonti e della letteratura critica, affiancata all'esame autoptico delle opere superstiti, studiate con il sussidio della documentazione di restauro, capovolge la consolidata lettura di un artista nato come scultore in marmo e solo in un secondo tempo passato alla pittura e alla pratica dello stucco, suggerendo una nuova prospettiva interpretativa. Del tutto ripensate sono le prime esperienze di Mazzoni accanto a Vasari, la sua posizione nella bottega dell'aretino e il comune soggiorno a Napoli del 1544-1545, così come il forte legame che unì i due artisti sino alla morte. Novità emergono anche in merito all'apprendistato con Daniele da Volterra e alle successive relazioni intrattenute, nella Roma degli anni Sessanta e Settanta, con gli allievi e collaboratori di quest'ultimo. La maggiore impresa di Mazzoni - la campagna decorativa del palazzo di Girolamo Capodiferro - è analizzata attraverso una disamina capillare che, oltre a illuminare i modelli e le responsabilità progettuali di Giulio, mira a restituire la composizione e il funzionamento dell'intero cantiere architettonico-decorativo. Il percorso di Mazzoni così ricostruito offre un punto di vista utile per ripensare le vicende della grande decorazione del Cinquecento a Roma - fondata sulla sinergica unione dei diversi media: pittura, stucco, scultura - e la diffusione fuori dall'Urbe.
