This book ties in with the latest free exhibition at the British Library, running from 7 November 2003 to 7 March 2004. It is an analysis of the contemporary manifestations of a traditional Chinese art form. Illustrated throughout with works from the Muban foundation, the foremost research collection of Chinese woodblock prints, the author shows how China's new artistic and political climate has produced images of virtuosity and eloquence. The works of 90 artists are grouped into broad themes, supported by essays from Chinese and British scholars which explore the political and literary contexts of printmaking in modern China and the materials, tools and techniques that the printmakers use. Biographies of each artist and a comprehensive bibliography are included.
