This fold-out chronology presents a subjective visual history of developments in architecture in the Netherlands in the 20th century. It is the printed version of a 'history wall' with a total length of about thirty metres, presented at the 4th Architectural Bienale of Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1999.
The emphasis is on developments and projects, as these were presented and discussed in the media and subsequently tracked down by critical and historical research. For this reason the 'discussion' of architecture as presented in books, journals and also in reports of meetings and congresses is incorporated in the chronology. This line of development is flanked on both sides by housing: above are experiments in the design of the individual house, below is the experience of social housing as it developed from the beginning of the century as a result of a social contract: the Housing Act of 1901 and its follow-up. And, as housing forms the most substantial part of the city, a number of urban plans are included: from early century key plans to reconstruction plans after 1945, via new town schemes for the acclaimed lands to the large urban reconstructions and extensions of today. The individual building, in all its elaborations of type and style, completes this compilation. Furthermore, some exceptional competition designs are shown.publiarq.com
