This is the first a+u special issue devoted primarily to the design of interior space. In this issue, a+u features the works of eriko horiki, washi designer. One of the themes of her work in exploring the possibilities of washi in architectural space. By combing it with various other materials,she has made it more expressive and windened its range of application. Throughout her 20-year history of professional activities, a+u indroduces the world of Eriko Horiki's works The art of handcrafting washi paper has a rich tradition in Japan. To pass on the culture and technique of Japan's paper-craft to forthcoming generations, Eriko Horiki seeks innovative possibilities in working with the idea of washi in architecture. Having acquired the traditional technique of washi-making in Fukui, Horiki personally handcrafts washi paper of her own design in her studio. The work that materializes from her novel ideas gives space a rich character that is reinforced through the changing qualities of light.
