He has maintained his interest in the relationship of words and imagery, often delighting in the absurd and pointing out the irony in contemporary art theory. Among his many awards is the Americans for the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award; a retrospective of his work will be on view at the Tate Modern in 2009.
