Frederick the Great's 1742 play Le Singe de la Mode was staged as a promenade through the Neues Palais in Potsdam on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the king's birth. This special publication provides insights into the circumstances surrounding this play and contains many illustrations of the production. The one-act play is about a fashion-crazy marquis and his uncle's attempts to get him back onto the straight and narrow. In his quest for the latest fashions, the main character - the 'fashion monkey' - asks himself questions regarding architecture, mistresses, clothes and philosophy. Each scene provides interesting insights into the intellectual world of Frederick the Great. The volume contains both the play's original text and a German translation. The Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave made the figurines and accessories in the exhibit from papier maché and painted paper. Her creations are masterful simulations of lavish lace, rustling silk and heavy velvet. Countless details are revealed in the brilliant and contextual photographs.
