From the mid-1950s until well into the 1970s, the debate on Modern Architecture and the city received a new impulse from a group of young European architects under the banner of Team 10. They met within the CIAM group - the famous platform for modern architects founded by Le Corbusier - but they soon abandoned this organization and started holding their own meetings.
At these Team 10 gatherings the issues of modernization, the welfare state and consumer society, as well as the role of the architect, were the subject of heated debate. The various built and unbuilt projects by Team 10 members served as a vehicle for these highly influential and inspiring exchanges. The body of thought generated by Team 10 is still relevant to the architectural practice of today.
This book on Team 10 brings together the complete history of the group for the first time. Research into hitherto closed collections and archives has brought new insights and a considerable number of unknown documents. Focusing on the ideas and the work of Team 10's core group, the book presents and analyses work by the Dutch architects Aldo van Eyck and Jaap Bakema, Alison and Peter Smithson from the United Kingdom, Giancarlo de Carlo from Italy, and Georges Candilis and Shadrach Woods from France. Other architects who were involved include Jose Coderch, Ralph Erskine, Amancio Guedes, Herman Hertzberger and Mathias Ungers.
The book presents the work of Team 10 from three perspectives. To be read chronologically or diachronically, the book offers an abundantly illustrated survey of Team 10 meetings, events, project documentation and other keys to the Team 10 discourse. The interpretative second section is a three-fold commentary on the legacy of Team 10, with essays by leading scholars about the origins and the position of Team 10 in the history of architecture, describing cross-overs with visual and non-western cultures, and also shedding light on architectural and urbanist approaches that were formulated in response to the problems of post-war modernity. The final section of this publication is a series of interviews with former Team 10 members, providing a unique portrait of the group and its meetings between 1953 and 1981.
This book is being published on the occasion of the special exhibition being held at the NAI in Rotterdam from September 24, 2005 through January 8, 2006. This exhibition will then go on tour to Milan, Paris and other cities.
