This Catalogue covers the exhibition that was staged at the Gallerie d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Ferrara (Italy) and is due to take place this summer at the Fine Arts Museum in the Palace of Charles V in Granada (La Alhambra) and the Sorolla Museum in Madrid.
Split into five sections - The Earth, Water, Patios, Gardens and The Garden at Casa
Sorolla -, this exhibition presents the works that Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923) created after 1906-1908 as a result of the artists fascination with gardens, which he was to paint directly in the open air at La Granja, the Alcázar in Seville, the Alhambra and Generalife in Granada and at his house in Madrid. These are paintings in which we can observe the artists interest in portraying the play of light and shade and different watery reflections by means of a sketch-like technique based on the use of very loose brushstrokes and striking colours.
The Catalogue is preceded by four essays written by Blanca Pons-Sorolla, Tomàs Llorens, María del Mar Villafranca, and Ana Luengo and David Ruiz, which analyse the painters career and the important role that gardens played as a key theme in his work, with special attention being granted to his stays at the Alhambra and the creation of his own garden at his house in Madrid.
Finally, an appendix brings together a complete list of all the works based on a garden theme that Sorolla produced throughout his entire artistic career.
