Built on the banks of the Spree by the Berlin energy concern Bewag in 1907, the power station Rummelsburg is regarded as an icon of industrial building culture in Germany, Today this huge construction with its impressive, light-filled hall is used as a temporary events location, but also as a set for international film productions.
However, to preserve ¡t in the long term, this important monument of technology requires a lasting economic perspective. As a first step towards revitalising the power station, therefore, the Vattenfall Europe AG - represented by the Bewag Aktiengeselischaft & Co KG - initiated a European competition for up-and-coming architects, urban planners and conservationists. The young planners demonstrated great creativity, innovative architectural solutions and surprising concepts in their proposals for a wide range of potentially workable ideas for reutilisation. Besides essays concerning the history of the building, this volume presents the entire range of competition entries and offers detailed documentation of the prize-winning designs, which are exemplary for the utilisation of large-scale historical buildings.
