This annotated catalogue deals with the small but, from an international point of view, highly significant collection of Spanish paintings at the Nationalmuseum. The collection consists of 40 works dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Masterpieces by El Greco, Murillo, Zurbarán and Goya, who is represented by three paintings and one miniature, endow the collection with its very high status. Each painting is placed in the context of Spanish history and Spanish artistic endeavour. Among recent discoveries can be included the attribution of two works of art from the 15th century to the Master of Aragón. Each catalogue entry also contains a complete record
of restoration work and the outcome of recent technical analyses. The author of the catalogue is Gudrun Maurer, MA, who works at the Prado in Madrid.
