Resumen del libro

Almost everybody is familiar with the Red-Blue Chair and the Rietveld Schröder House. Their creator, Gerrit ThomasRietveld, was one of the most famous architects and designers of the twentieth century. Rietvelds designs are included in the collections of practically every important international museum of modern art and design. The Rietveld Schröder House was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. However, few know the full scope of Rietvelds oeuvre. He designed on every scale: from a bus stop to a small village. Commonly regarded as the most important architect within the De Stijl group, Rietveld was also one of the founders of CIAM.He continued his experiments right up to his death in 1964. His work and teachings have been a major infl uence in the world of architecture and design. Rietvelds Universe is a comprehensive publication presenting the results of new insights and research, including contributions by international leading scholars on t he subject. Focusing on the context in which Rietvelds work should be placed, this book addresses his interpretation of space and the way he designed it, as well as the mutual infl uences between his work and that of contemporaries such as Mondrian, Van Doesburg, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto.
