Pour la première fois, l'histoire délivre tous les éléments permettant de retracer le processus intellectuel qui a abouti à créer un nouveau style : l'art gothique. L'art gothique, voulu par des religieux maîtres d'ouvrage, apparaît au cúur de la France du Nord qui connaît à partir du XIe siècle un redressement démographique spectaculaire. Ce dynamisme se répercute sur l'ensemble de la société et notamment dans les milieux intellectuels. Des centres se font jour à Chartres et bientôt à Paris, dont le destin exceptionnel s'annonce. La pensée qui s'y développe puise son inspiration dans l'Antiquité tardive. A partir de 1130, les religieux se lancent dans les reconstructions de cathédrales ou abbatiales. Ils conçoivent des programmes inédits pour répondre aux besoins de la liturgie et de la démographie et font appel à des architectes novateurs qui développent un style nouveau avec de vastes espaces inondés de lumière. Pour relever ces défis, les architectes bouleversent les techniques de construction, entraînant avec artistes et artisans. Le maître d'ouvrage reprend le rôle qu'il avait perdu depuis l'Antiquité pour décider du programme, imaginer les montages financiers, résoudre les crises internes Un essai brillant, largement documenté et illustré, qui retrace la révolution que constitue cette nouvelle esthétique qui mettra près d'un siècle pour s'introduire dans les régions éloignées.
