The name J.J.P. Oud is synonymous with modern Dutch architecture in the first half of the twentieth century. J.J.P. Oud. Poetic Functionalist covers the entire work of this pioneer of Dutc architecture: from his first steps in his chosen profession to his role as one of the founders, together with Theo van Doesburg, of De Stijl, from his celebrated prewar housing estates to his varied and until now relatively neglected post-war output. The book demonstrates Oud's versatility: his articles, his designs for stationary, book covers, furniture, a gravestone, war memorials, and, of course, his well-known architectural designs. Including the Witte Dorp in Rotterdam, the Hoek van Holland housing estate, the Kiefhoek in Rotterdam, his contribution to the Weissenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart, the Shell Building in The Hague, and the Spaarbank and De Utrecht buildings in Rotterdam. This publication offers extensive documentation of his oeuvre and for the first time renders it accessible to people all over the world in a manner comparable to that of other prominent figures in the Modern Movement such as Le Corbusier, Gropius and Mies van der Rohe. In addition, detailed attention is paid to the context within which Oud's work came into being. An interesting aspect of the latter is Oud's strongly individualistic stance as regards his fellow pioneers, with whom he maintained an extensive correspondence, and his decidedly critical attitude vis à vis the mainstream of modernism.publiarq.com
