It is less than a century ago that the Republic of Turkey was founded, bringing almost 700 years of Ottoman rule to an end. Superb palaces, mosques and museum collections still testify to the astonishingly rich history of the former capital. This catalogue, published to accompany the exhibition Istanbul: The City and the Sultan in Amsterdam, draws on the glorious treasures of the sultans from many museums in Istanbul, including the Topkapi, to re-create Istanbul in its Ottoman days.
Aimed at introducing Ottoman culture through Istanbul, over 300 priceless artifacts from the Topkapi Palace, the Museum of Turkish-Islamic Arts, the Sadberk Hanim Museum and the Sabanci Museum will be exhibited. Among the artifacts are portraits of sultans, caftans, carpets, gifts presented to sultans, scientific and literary works, calligraphies, pictures and miniatures portraying important historical events, glazed tiles, mystical objects, water pipes and musical instruments.
The artifacts headed to Holland from Istanbul will be exhibited in a different format than a classical museum style. De Nieuwe Kerk will present the artifacts in 12 sections, which will try to convey some details about Ottoman life in the marketplace, the coffee house, the Turkish bath, the mansion, the cemetery, the mosque, the dervish lodge and the palace. Music, discussions and films will occupy an important part of the exhibition. It will also be possible to take in the exhibition
