This exhibition presents more than 50 paintings and mixed media constructions by Uruguayan painter Ignacio Iturria (born Montevideo 1949- ), one of South America's most imaginative artists. Creator of a most unusual world, Iturria observes with humor and irony the characters, objects and situations of modern man. Genre scenes from the most absurd to the most sublime - odd interiors where proportion is ignored, figures doing basic and banal functions, and a child's array of toy soldiers and figurines in the endless sequence of everyday life. In paintings of room interiors replete with furniture and domestic objects, the works often border on installation, where manipulated images become three-dimensional acrylic and papier-mâché objects creating hybrid paintings that confuse spatial perception and hover between painting and sculpture. Iturria represented Uruguay at the LVI Venice Biennale in 1995, winning the "Casa di Risparmio" Special Prize, and today is included in museum collections internationally. The exhibition is organized by the Boca Raton Museum of Art, and is guest curated by Wayne Baerwaldt, Director of The Power Plant Contemporary Art Center, Toronto. The exhibition is funded in part by a generous grant from the Praxis Foundation.
