This volume describes the latest approaches to the graphic documentation of mural paintings that were presented at a seminar at ICCROM in November 1999. It is some 350 pages, extensively illustrated in colour and black-and-white, and contains 22 papers contributed by conservator-restorers and documentation specialists. In addition, it provides a summary of the discussions, documents prepared by three Working Groups, a survey of existing documentation guidelines, and a glossary of terms used during the seminar. It is accompanied by a CD-ROM which has a bibliography and demonstrations of technical approaches that have been applied in this field. The research seminar was organized jointly with several partner institutions: the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro (ICR); Courtauld Institute of Art, Wall Painting Conservation Department; the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI); Niedersächsisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege (NLD); Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique (IRPA); ICOMOS-CIPA (Comité International de Photogrammétrie Architecturale) and, the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), Area di Ricerca di Roma. The proceedings were published with support from the European Union Raphael Programme, English Heritage and the GCI.
