Philologue, éditeur, traducteur, libraire, imprimeur, peut-être graveur et relieur, Geoffroy Tory (1480-1533) est une figure inclassable de la première Renaissance qui croise les disciplines (linguistique, stylistique, gravure, architecture, philosophie, histoire, etc.) et multiplie les innovations.
Il est à la fois un théoricien original et un praticien qui propose des réalisations soignées et atypiques, notamment quant au lien entre le texte et l'image. Auteur du Champ Fleury (1529), un des plus beaux livres imprimés de la Renaissance, " imprimeur du roi ", acteur important de la grammatisation du français, introducteur de signes comme la cédille et les guillemets modernes, concepteur de motifs iconographiques, introducteur des bordures à arabesques, G Tory est un " opérateur de pluridisciplinarité "
Par son ampleur, sa variété, voire ses contradictions, l'oeuvre de Tory est à la fois un document de première importance sur les enjeux de la mise en livre et de la grammatisation dans la France du premier tiers du XVIe siècle, mais aussi une oeuvre en soi, singulière et atypique, aux limites encore mal circonscrites et restent à interpréter. Son oeuvre a tellement fasciné qu'on lui a attribué des manuscrits, miniatures, gravures, traductions et un élève, le typographe Claude Garamond.
