In the eighteenth century interest in Chine de Commande, Chinese export porcelain made to special order for Europeans, was considerable. Porcelain decorated with coats of arms was particularly popular. For the Dutch market between 600 and 700 fine services with the arms of Dutch families were made, of which some 500 are described here. This reference work is the first publication to deal extensively with the subject. Aside from anyone interested in ceramics, heraldry, genealogy, social and colonial history or the history of East West relations, the book is useful to specialists like museums, libraries, auction houses and antique dealers. As one of the largest importers of Chinese porcelain during the 18th century, especially between 1730 and 1750, the Dutch had quite exceptional armorial services made, decorated with rich heraldic and other personalised images. This fine armorial porcelain reveals the Dutch had their own special taste, which was quite often at odds with that of its neighbouring countries.
