Thanks to an agreement with the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg - one of the world's most celebrated art institutions - the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) and the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) will mount an exhibition highlighting the extraordinary treasures collected by Catherine the Great (1729-1796). These include paintings (by Chardin, Bourdon, Le Lorrain, Tiepolo, Vien and Boucher among others), jewellery, precious stones, furniture, architectural models and many other priceless objects. Catherine II, Empress of Russia, was the greatest art collector and patron of the 18th century. She believed in the political dimension of art, and was convinced of its fundamental role in changing Russia, both socially and culturally. More than 300 works and objects in this exhibition, most of which have never before been shown in North America, will reveal the grandeur of her ambitions.
This exhibition is organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto and The State Hermitage Museum in association with The Hermitage Museum Foundation of Canada.
