The creative power inherent in the relations between Islam and the Western world lies at the heart of fashion designer Susanne Kümper's work: With the help of the german CIM (Centrum für internationale Migration und Entwicklung) and others, she has since 1999 built a 'fashion department' at the Helwan University in Cairo. There, imaginative creations for Western taste as well as for Islamic needs are developed. In the 'Design Workshop St Catherine', Bedouin women from the Sinai valleys make, moreover, traditional embroideries for modern outfits which have been designed by students and lecturers from Cairo.
A preface from the house of Dior explains why outfits from northern Africa are becoming more and more a focus of attention in the Western world.
