Il volume ripercorre analiticamente l'esemplare vicenda artistica dello scultore danese Bertel Thorvaldsen, uno dei maggiori protagonisti dell'arte dell'Ottocento europeo. Il vasto corpus delle sue opere, dalla scultura mitologica ai grandi monumenti civili, alla scultura cristiana, viene riletto all'interno del suo contesto originario, cioè la città di Roma intesa come il laboratorio cosmopolita della scultura moderna. L'artista vi operò tra il 1797 e il 1842 dando vita a una scuola di duratura influenza. Sulla base del dibattito critico del tempo e del serrato confronto con le fonti figurative della tradizione e le opere dei contemporanei, soprattutto in dialettica con l'altro grande "classico moderno" Antonio Canova, questa monografía suggerisce nuove interpretazioni della complessa poetica di Thorvaldsen e delle sue innovative scelte formali. Il volume è corredato da bibliografia e indice dei nomi.
