Impresa non facile, a causa della carenza dei dati che ci sono pervenuti; con grande onestà Elsa Laurenzi non nasconde questo problema, né presenta ricostruzioni "facili" ma infondate. Accompagna invece il lettore alla scoperta di una società che mantiene i propri costumi e la propria cultura vivendo all'interno di un'altra più vasta società, tanto profondamente diversa quanto tollerante, che seppe integrare realtà varie e contrastanti. Si basa sulle varie fonti disponibili, gli scrittori antichi, i testi epigrafici, le testimonianze archeologiche e fornisce, mediante un glossario distribuito all'interno del testo, utili e puntuali spiegazioni di termini non a tutti noti.
