This book, which is part of the most important exhibition on African art to have been held in Italy, brings together more than 300 art works, including the Dogon masterpieces, recently dated at circa one thousand AD, the very famous Benin bronzes, the precious afro-Portuguese ivories collected by European courts in the sixteenth century, and the 'primitive' works from the nineteenth century which greatly influenced the sensibility of twentieth century avant-garde artists. Some of these twentieth century artists whose work will be exhibited in this show include Derain, Picasso, Matisse, Giacometti and Modigliani.
The rich catalogue contains colour illustrations of all the works exhibited, with special attention paid to the quality of images created especially for the show by the great photographer Hugues Dubois. Included in the volume are significant works from very rich and sophisticated kingdoms of ancient Africa, the great sculptures in wood and African art collected by sixteenth-century European courts.
A special section of the book is dedicated to the collecting of African art by leading artists of the twentieth century and their own works influenced by Africa. These artists include Derain, Modigliani, Picasso, Matisse, Giacometti and Man Ray.
This complete repertoire of African art from its origins to the present day also contains essays by the Nobel prize winner Wole Soyinka, the historian and academic Théophile Obenga, who was minister in the Congo a number of times, and Jean-Louis Paudrat.
